The Day When My Mom Went to Jail
It was on a weekend. The sun was out and people was out. I was 15 in November 2006 when my mother went to jail. We were on Springfield Street and she was selling drugs.
I was walking to my friend Quanequa’s house when I saw the police. My mother had some drugs in her hand and the police said, “Come here.” My mother went to the police car and I had wanted to cry, but I told my friend “That what she get.”
My mother said she love me. When she said that, I knew she was going to make it. She told my grandmother that “I will come home soon.” The thing I think about the day she went to jail was how much I had want to cry, but people would just look at me. I was so embarrassed.
The thing I had to lose was that I didn’t have no one to talk to but my grandmother. She had did a lot for me. She listened when I tell a lot about me everyday. I just think to myself, when my mother get out can she do something for her life?
The day she went to jail I was with my little sister, Tierra. She was only 13. She was really mad, too. My mother was following someone else’s path. My friend’s mom was doing the same thing. They were following each other’s paths.
The thing I think about when she get out was….. “Can she get on her own path? I hope when she gets out she can get a job and get a house and get us back and be like a parent is supposed to be.” My friend and I grew closer. We talk everyday. The day me and my siblings were at home by our self, my brother, Devarrly, got burned by a iron.
My grandmother was kind because she took us. If she didn’t take us, we would be in a foster home. Now I’m trying to be a role model to my brother and sister. I’m doing all my chores, cleaning the house, respecting elders, and doing good in school.
My grandmother is a strong woman because the things she did for us kept our family together. She helped us and we helped her when she had her stroke. We gave her food, washed her, and helped her to the bathroom. We also help her with her medicine.
Since my mom got out of jail, I’ve been doing better in school. When she was in jail, I was worried about my mom, and I was doing badly in school. I was missing classes and coming in late. Now I don’t do that. I want everyone to just follow their own path. I think people that follow other people don’t get anywhere in life.
