Football

I’m about to tell you about the time I won a football game. It was my second week at Orr and it was my first time playing for the Orr Spartans football team.   We were at practice the day before the game when Coach Red said “Larome, you’re going to have to step your game up today because I need you to start on offense, defense, and specialty teams.”

I was shocked because I wasn’t expecting that.  I thought I would sit on the bench all day just hoping I would get in the game for a few minutes or so, just to get my stats up high enough to be looked at for college. So I said “O.K. coach, I’ll do my best.”

The next day in school teammates were saying stuff like “You had better not mess up our chances for a victory.”   I said the same thing I said to Coach Red, “OK, I’ll do my best.”

Later on in the day I was at lunch and I was just thinking to myself, what if I do mess up the game, what if I run to the wrong touch down by accident and get tackled for a safety?  I went to Coach Red’s office and told him I didn’t want to start. He asked why not? I said it’s too much pressure, and I don’t think I can pull it off. He said “Son you don’t have to play if you don’t want to. But I believe in you”. I said “Thanks Coach.” I asked him why do you believe in me so much? He said “Because I see you on the field every day giving a hundred and ten percent and you don’t complain or talk back, and to me those are the signs of a true champion.”

Later that day during the football game I did something no defensive tackle ever did in Spartan football ever.  I ran a fumble back almost 40 yards for a touchdown.

After the football game I saw the same people who criticized me.   I said “I hope you seen me score that touchdown. I did it just to show you that I can and will always amount to a great football player.”
